How to Play

Choose Your Settings
Select your preferred era, difficulty level, and game mode. Whether you want a quick daily challenge or a full campaign, there is a mode for you.

Study the Battle Image
Examine the artwork depicting a famous historical battle. Look for visual clues like armor, weapons, terrain, and formations.

Use Hints If Needed
Stuck? Reveal up to three progressive hints to help narrow down the battle. Each hint costs points, so use them wisely.

Submit Your Guess
Type the name of the battle and submit your answer. Correct answers earn points based on difficulty, hints used, and your current streak.

Climb the Leaderboard
Build your streak, earn achievements, and compete on the global leaderboard. Share your results with friends and challenge them to beat your score.

Where the battle facts come from
Every battle in the encyclopedia has a date, a location, a short account of what happened and why it mattered, and one lesser-known fact. These are compiled from widely available published histories and general reference works, and each battle page links to the matching Wikipedia article so you can read further and check the sources for yourself.
Dates for ancient battles follow the conventional scholarly dating and are shown as BCE or CE. Where historians disagree about numbers such as army sizes or casualties, the descriptions use the commonly cited range rather than a single precise figure.
The battle images are AI-generated artistic interpretations made for the game. They are not historical paintings or photographs, and they should not be treated as visual evidence of how a battle looked.

About the Creator
BattleGuess was created by Harry H, an independent web developer and lifelong military history reader based in the UK. He builds and maintains the game, writes the battle descriptions and hints, and runs the daily challenge.
What started as a side project combining a love of history with web development has grown into a game featuring 227 battles across 9 eras, five game modes, a daily challenge with a global leaderboard, and a companion Android app, History Quiz: Guess the Date.
