Sultan Mehmed II besieged Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire, with a massive army and the largest cannons ever built. After a 53-day siege, the Ottomans breached the legendary Theodosian Walls. The last Byzantine Emperor, Constantine XI, died fighting.
