What happened at the Battle of Kosovo?
Prince Lazar of Serbia and Sultan Murad I of the Ottoman Empire clashed on the Field of Blackbirds (Kosovo Polje) in a battle that killed both leaders. A Serbian knight, Miloš Obilić, assassinated Murad in his tent, and Lazar was captured and executed. Though the battle's immediate outcome was ambiguous, it led to Serbia's gradual absorption into the Ottoman Empire. Kosovo became the central myth of Serbian national identity, commemorated in epic poetry for centuries.
