Battles of the American Civil War

8 battles

The major battles of the American Civil War in order, from Fort Sumter and Bull Run through Antietam and Gettysburg to Vicksburg and Chattanooga.

The war in brief

The American Civil War (1861 to 1865) was fought between the United States and the eleven Confederate states that tried to leave it, chiefly over slavery. Fort Sumter opened the war, and the rout at Bull Run ended hopes that it would be short. Shiloh showed the scale of killing to come. Antietam, the bloodiest single day in American history, gave Lincoln the victory he needed to issue the Emancipation Proclamation. Chancellorsville was Lee's boldest win, and Gettysburg his costliest defeat. In the same week, Grant took Vicksburg and split the Confederacy along the Mississippi, and Chattanooga opened the road into Georgia. Together they trace how the war turned in 1863.
