Historical artwork depicting the Battle of Siege of Vienna

Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Vienna, the capital of Habsburg Austria, in the Ottoman Empire's deepest thrust into central Europe. The defenders held out despite being heavily outnumbered, aided by autumn rains that bogged down Ottoman supply lines and rendered their heavy siege guns unusable. Suleiman withdrew after two weeks, marking the high-water mark of Ottoman expansion into Western Europe.

💡 ¿Sabías que...?

Suleiman's army at the 1529 Siege of Vienna was slowed by the worst autumn rains in memory, and his massive siege cannons had to be abandoned on the muddy roads of Hungary.
