Sultan Murad II emerged from retirement to face a Crusader army led by King Wladyslaw III of Poland and Hungary near Varna on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The young king launched a reckless cavalry charge into the Ottoman center and was killed, his head displayed on a pike. The decisive Ottoman victory ended the last serious Crusade aimed at driving the Ottomans from Europe and secured Ottoman dominance in the Balkans.

King Wladyslaw III's head was placed on a pike after Varna and paraded through Ottoman lands. His body was never identified, leading to legends that he had survived and was living in hiding.
