Babur, a descendant of both Timur and Genghis Khan, defeated Sultan Ibrahim Lodi's much larger Delhi Sultanate army using cannons, matchlock firearms, and innovative cart-based field fortifications. Despite being outnumbered roughly four to one, Babur's gunpowder weapons and tactical genius carried the day. The victory founded the Mughal Empire, which would rule most of the Indian subcontinent for over three centuries and create some of history's greatest architectural and cultural achievements.

Babur wrote detailed memoirs called the Baburnama, which contain one of the earliest firsthand accounts of India by a Central Asian conqueror and are considered a masterpiece of autobiographical literature.
