During the Long Turkish War, Sultan Mehmed III's Ottoman army faced a combined Habsburg and Transylvanian force at Mezokeresztes in Hungary. The Ottomans were on the verge of defeat when Habsburg troops broke ranks to loot the Ottoman camp, allowing the janissaries to counterattack and rout the disorganized Christian forces. The dramatic reversal turned a near-catastrophe into an Ottoman victory, though the costly Long Turkish War would continue for another decade.
