Historical artwork depicting the Battle of Battle of Pruth

The Ottoman army under Grand Vizier Baltaci Mehmed Pasha surrounded Tsar Peter the Great's Russian army along the Pruth River in Moldova. Trapped with no escape, Peter was forced to negotiate a humiliating peace, returning the fortress of Azov to the Ottomans and dismantling his Black Sea fleet. The campaign was one of the Ottoman Empire's last great military successes and temporarily reversed Russian expansion toward the Black Sea.

💡 ¿Sabías que...?

Peter the Great was so desperate to escape the trap at the Pruth that his wife Catherine reportedly gave up her jewelry to bribe the Ottoman Grand Vizier into accepting lenient peace terms.
