A garrison of roughly 200 Texan defenders held the fortified Alamo mission against Mexican President Santa Anna's army of thousands for 13 days before being overwhelmed on March 6, 1836. All defenders were killed, including famous frontiersmen Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, and commander William Barrett Travis. Though a military defeat, the heroic stand became a powerful symbol. 'Remember the Alamo!' became the rallying cry that inspired the Texan army to defeat Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto six weeks later, securing Texas independence.
