Antonio Jose de Sucre led patriot forces up the slopes of the Pichincha volcano to attack Spanish royalist positions above Quito. Fighting in fog and thin mountain air at over 3,500 meters altitude, the patriots defeated the royalists and liberated the territory that would become Ecuador.

The battle on Pichincha volcano was fought at an altitude where many soldiers from the coastal lowlands struggled to breathe. Sucre himself had to be helped up the final slopes.
