Robert the Bruce's Scottish army defeated a far larger English force under Edward II near Stirling Castle. The Scots used dense spear formations called schiltrons and chose boggy terrain that neutralized English heavy cavalry. The decisive victory secured Scottish independence for centuries and cemented Bruce's place as Scotland's greatest king. It remains one of the most celebrated battles in Scottish history.
