Philip II Augustus of France defeated a powerful coalition of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV, King John of England's allies, and the Count of Flanders in a single decisive battle. The victory cemented French royal power, led to John signing the Magna Carta under pressure from his barons, and ended Otto IV's claim to the imperial throne. Bouvines is considered one of the most consequential battles in medieval European history.
