Historical artwork depicting the Battle of Battle of Lechfeld

King Otto I of Germany gathered a large army and defeated the Magyars in a decisive battle on the Lechfeld plain near Augsburg. The Magyar raiding force was annihilated as it tried to retreat, ending half a century of devastating Hungarian raids into Western Europe. The victory established Otto as the dominant ruler in Europe and led to his coronation as Holy Roman Emperor in 962, founding the imperial tradition that lasted until 1806.

💡 ¿Sabías que...?

The captured Magyar leaders at Lechfeld were hanged, and Otto's victory was so complete that the Magyars abandoned raiding entirely and settled down to become the Christian Kingdom of Hungary.
