Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent's Ottoman army annihilated the Hungarian army under King Louis II in less than two hours. The young Hungarian king drowned in a swamp while fleeing the rout. The decisive Ottoman victory led to the partition of Hungary between the Ottomans, Habsburgs, and the Principality of Transylvania, fundamentally reshaping the political map of Central Europe for over 150 years.

King Louis II of Hungary was only 20 years old when he drowned fleeing Mohacs. His body armor dragged him under the water of a swollen stream as he tried to escape on horseback.
