The largest naval battle of World War I saw 250 warships clash in the North Sea off the coast of Denmark. The British Royal Navy lost more ships and sailors than the German High Seas Fleet, yet the strategic outcome favored Britain: the German fleet never again seriously challenged British naval supremacy. Germany's High Seas Fleet remained bottled up in port for the rest of the war, ensuring Allied control of the seas.

Three British battlecruisers exploded and sank at Jutland due to inadequate magazine protection. Admiral Beatty, watching two of his ships blow up, remarked, 'There seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today.'
