Paraguayan forces under Marshal Francisco Solano Lopez launched a massive assault against the entrenched Triple Alliance forces of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. The attack was repulsed with devastating casualties, marking a turning point in the bloodiest war in South American history.
