Bernardo O'Higgins and his patriot forces made a desperate last stand in the town of Rancagua against royalist forces. Surrounded and outnumbered, the patriots fought from barricades in the central plaza for two days before O'Higgins led a daring breakout. The defeat ended the Patria Vieja period and forced the patriots into exile in Argentina.

After his defeat at Rancagua, O'Higgins led survivors across the Andes to Mendoza, where he met San Martin. Together they would plan the liberation campaign that would return to free Chile three years later.
