The Allied attempt to force the Dardanelles strait and knock the Ottoman Empire out of World War I ended in a costly eight-month failure. ANZAC and British forces landed on the Gallipoli peninsula but could never break through Ottoman defenses commanded by Mustafa Kemal (later Atatürk). The campaign cost over 250,000 Allied casualties and forged the national identities of Australia, New Zealand, and modern Turkey.
