The Seljuk Turks under Sultan Alp Arslan defeated the Byzantine army and captured Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes in one of history's most consequential battles. The disaster shattered Byzantine military power in Anatolia, opening the peninsula to massive Turkish migration and settlement. The loss of Anatolia permanently weakened Byzantium and was a direct catalyst for the First Crusade two decades later.
