Simon de Montfort led a daring cavalry charge from the town of Muret with fewer than 1,000 knights against a combined army of perhaps 30,000 under King Peter II of Aragon and the Counts of Toulouse and Foix. Peter II was killed in the fighting, and his army disintegrated. The victory secured the Albigensian Crusade's success, destroyed Cathar hopes for Aragonese protection, and ultimately brought southern France under the French crown.
