The Battle of Ayacucho was the last major battle of the Spanish American wars of independence. Antonio Jose de Sucre led the patriot forces to a decisive victory over the Spanish Viceroy's army on the high Andean plateau. The Spanish surrender that followed effectively ended over 300 years of colonial rule in South America.
