Antonio Jose de Sucre led patriot forces up the slopes of the Pichincha volcano to attack Spanish royalist positions above Quito. Fighting in fog and thin mountain air at over 3,500 meters altitude, the patriots defeated the royalists and liberated the territory that would become Ecuador.
