Napoleon assembled the largest army he had ever commanded and defeated Archduke Charles of Austria in a brutal two-day battle on the Marchfeld plain near Vienna. Over 300,000 soldiers clashed in one of the largest battles in European history to that point. Napoleon's massing of over 100 guns into a grand battery to smash the Austrian center proved decisive. The victory forced Austria to sign the Treaty of Schonbrunn and cemented Napoleon's dominance over continental Europe.
