The Battle of Maipu was the decisive engagement of the Chilean War of Independence. San Martin's patriot forces defeated the Spanish royalist army on the plains south of Santiago. After the victory, San Martin embraced the Chilean leader Bernardo O'Higgins and declared Chile's independence finally assured.
