King Philip II of Spain launched a massive fleet of 130 ships to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth I. English commanders including Sir Francis Drake used faster, more maneuverable ships and fireships to scatter the Armada from its anchorage at Calais. Fierce storms then devastated the fleeing Spanish fleet as it attempted to sail home around Scotland and Ireland. The defeat ended Spain's hopes of conquering England, boosted English national confidence, and marked the beginning of England's rise as a dominant naval power.
