Historical artwork depicting the Battle of Battle of Alesia

Caesar besieged the Gallic stronghold of Alesia by building an extraordinary double ring of fortifications—one facing inward to contain Vercingetorix's army, and another facing outward to defend against a massive Gallic relief force. Trapped between two armies, Caesar's legions held both lines and defeated both forces. Vercingetorix surrendered, ending major Gallic resistance and securing Rome's conquest of Gaul.
