The Roman general Aetius forged an alliance with the Visigoths and other Germanic tribes to halt Attila the Hun's devastating invasion of Gaul. In one of the last great battles of the Western Roman Empire, the coalition forced Attila to retreat after a bloody stalemate. Though the Visigothic king Theodoric was killed, the battle saved Western Europe from Hun domination and marked the high-water mark of Attila's conquests.
