What happened at the Battle of Alesia?
Caesar besieged the Gallic stronghold of Alesia by building an extraordinary double ring of fortifications—one facing inward to contain Vercingetorix's army, and another facing outward to defend against a massive Gallic relief force. Trapped between two armies, Caesar's legions held both lines and defeated both forces. Vercingetorix surrendered, ending major Gallic resistance and securing Rome's conquest of Gaul.
Did you know?
Caesar's siege works at Alesia totaled about 18 kilometers of fortifications facing inward and 21 kilometers facing outward, all built in approximately three weeks by his engineering-savvy legions.
